Vanessa Hudgens: Efron was the only original cast member who did not go on the road because he was in Toronto filming the movie musical Hairspray (2007), leaving singer and songwriter Drew Seeley (who also sang Troys parts in HSM) to fill in for him. Hudgens and Efron not only sang and danced during the making of High School Musical, they also reportedly fell in love. The pair secretly dated for a few months, unofficially revealing their relationship in the pages of tabloid magazines during a Hawaii vacation in the summer of 2007. They were snapped on the beach kissing and instantly became young Hollywoods newest sweethearts, following in the footsteps of Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder in the eighties, and Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in the nineties. Teenage fans of Hudgens and Efron even nicknamed the pair Zanessa a combination of their first names. The media coverage of the young lovebirds only helped bring more attention to High School Musical 2.

Vanessa Hudgens: After moving to England to study drama and music at Kingsbrook Business and Enterprise College, she returned to L.A. and scored roles on shows such as Quintuplets, Cover Me, and Still Standing, as well as films like Thirteen and Thunderbirds. After the 2006 phenomenon High School Musical -- which included the best-selling soundtrack and several Teen Choice Awards -- Hudgens was offered a recording deal, and began working on her album that summer. Simply named V, the album came out that fall, just as Hudgens began working on the High School Musical sequel. She also toured with fellow Disney sensations the Cheetah Girls that fall and winter. In August 2007, Hudgens won the Choice Breakout Singer -- Female award at that years Teen Choice Awards. That month, High School Musical 2 and its soundtrack were released; a few weeks later, some of Hudgens personal photos, including one of her nude, leaked onto the Internet. During the ensuing controversy, it was unsure whether or not she would be back for the third High School Musical installment, but Disney kept her in the franchise. Her second pop album, Identified, arrived in summer 2008, and High School Musical 3: Senior Year appeared that fall.

Vanessa Hudgens: Hudgens launched a tour with the rest of the cast of High School Musical in fall 2006, performing the songs from the soundtrack album as well of the three singles from her debut album. A DVD and an album named High School Musical: The Concert were released in 2007, which includes one song performed live by her.
